60-day Insanity workout brings muscles and more

I was channel-surfing early one morning when images of sculpted bodies working out together caught my attention.

It wasn’t the first time I had seen this Insanity infomercial, but it was the first time I wondered if the person on the screen could be me.

Could this DVD transform my 50-year-old body? I wanted to test the testimonials, and convinced my (eager) 17-year-old daughter Samantha to try it with me.

With the order placed, my first order of business was scheduling a photo shoot to establish my “before” image. This was not pleasant. I look good in clothes. I do not look good in Spandex shorts and a sports bra.

So I don’t know what was more difficult, my “before” photo shoot or the first few days of Insanity workouts.

One advantage of doing Insanity workouts from home is that Samantha is the only person who can see me or hear me struggle. And her struggles look and sound a lot like mine. [Read more...]

Insanity Workout Review 30 Days

Month One of my Insanity Workout is done!!!

Month in Review.

I have to say I really enjoyed these style of workouts, although very tough. Shaun T is great in this program he is there pushing you the whole time. These workouts come right at you and don’t let up one bit the enitre time so you know your burning calories. They force you to stay “in the moment” you can’t think of what move is next or any thing else becuase you are so involved with what your doing. Fortunatly they are short enough to allow you to recover each day. When Insanity first came out Shaun T said that it will be just as much of a mental workout as a physical one, so true! I find myself being a little nervous before each workout, because I know what’s to come. I have to search deep to find the mental toughnest to get through the workouts. Insanity is NOT easy and not for everyone, but it’s for me. In my opinion there should of been one or maybe two more workouts added. I had no problem repeating the workouts, but when they repeated in the same week made it much tougher. You workout for four weeks then you have the recovery week (which is what I’m in now). Four weeks really seemed perfect to me, I feel like 3 would have been to short and five to long. Month one workouts are all under 42 minutes in length, but month two workouts look to range in the 55 – 59 minutes each. I am hopeful that I have adapted to these workouts and can even finish the month two routine.

Insanity Fit Test-Just what it says, this is the fit test of specific moves. You have one minute to do each move and write down how many you can do in the minute. At only 25 minutes it’s still a pretty tough workout. I found that trying to get decent numbers actually made me push myself really hard.
Insanity Plyo Cardio Circuit-This is the first “circuit” workout of Insanity and the whole max interval training comes into play here. You’ll workout intensly for 3 minutes and then get a 30 second break, thats not an typo, 30 seconds! And don’t forget about the 10 minute insane warm up. On good days I was able to burn 800+ calories on this workout.
Insanity Pure Cardio-Loved and hated at the same time. Again you will have a 10 minutes intense warm up and during the stretch Shaun T says ” I’m really nervous for this workout”. I have to say that scared me. Pure cardio is just that CARDIO. After your warm up and stretch you will them start your workout with doing each and every move for one minute, no breaks (unless you take one yourself). Trust me you will take breaks, even the cast takes them in this one. At the conclusion of this workout everyone is dead tired. What I like about Pure cardio is NO REPEAT moves, new move each minute.
Insanity Power & Resistance-Lots and lots of floor work. Lots and lots of power (jumping) One of the harder workouts for me. This is another circuit workout and again 3 minute on 30 secondes off.
Shaun T-I was originally worried about working out to a Shaun T workout dvd. I was afraid it may be like those Hip Hop Abs dancy workouts. Well it’s not and Shaun is really good in these workouts. He’s not annoying and is very motivational and the man is INSANE! All in all I’m glad Shaun did these workouts I wouldn’t want it any other way.

P90X vs Insanity | P90X Compared to Insanity

P90X vs Insanity

P90X vs Insanity
Insanity vs P90X

Insanity is the first workout to come out to rival the popular P90X.

I have completed P90X and have had pretty good results. I started with a weight of 220 pounds and after two rounds I got down to 180 pounds. Then there came Insanity. I decided to purchase Insanity and give it my all. Knowing that this would be one of the hardest workouts I have ever done. You can see how I’m doing here. But the question remains…

Which program is better, P90X or Insanity?

P90X vs Insanity Overview

I personally don’t think that’s the right question. I think you will need to determine what kind of workout your looking for as these two are different. Neither of these workout are for everyone, both are pretty intense workouts and are actually designed for those individuals whom are in moderate shape to begin with. With that being said, a beginner can do either of these at their own pace, but please do what’s right for you. So lets compare P90X vs Insanity.

P90X – P90X vs Insanity

P90X LogoP90X is a complete workout routine that includes resistance training, cardio and yoga. Most of the workouts are one hour in length with exception to two, Cardio X (45 minutes) and Yoga X (90 minutes). To be able to start your P90X routine you will need a few things. You will need a pull up bar (or a place to do them) and a set of dumbbells or resistance bands. P90X uses muscle confusion to get you absolutly ripped in just 90 days. P90X comes as three different versions and you can pick the one that best suites your needs. The three versions are Classic, Lean and Doubles. Classic is the most popular version and in it you will workout 6 days a week with an optional stretch day for the seventh. In one week you will have 3 resistance days 2 cardio days and one yoga day, each resistance day has a ab routine added to it. The Lean version would be for someone wanting to put more emphasis on losing opposed to gaining weight. It’s program consist of 2 days of resistance and abs, three days of cardio and one day of yoga. Last but not least is Doubles. Doubles is the classic version on steriods. You will add a 45 minutes cardio workout on every resistance day, three in all.

Tony Horton is great and will be like youir own personal trainer for the entire 90 days and beyond. He will show you how to do each exercise safely and precise. He will also show how to do each exercise in a beginner ametuer and advanced form. I like Tony in P90X he does not gt annoying and he has plenty of helpful hints to help you get what you want out of each workout.

P90X also comes with revolutionary 3 phase diet plan. It was designed to help you lose fat while maintaining a high level of energy. You can have good results without following the diet plan to a “T”, but of course you are sacrificing your results a little bit. My suggestion is to follow the guide as closly as possible.

All in all P90X is set up really well. The calendar and fitness guide show you what you need to do each day and how to do it right. All you need to do is follow the simple guidelines and get in the best shape of your life!

    Why P90X Is So Effective:
The secret behind the P90X system is an advanced training technique called “Muscle Confusion,” which accelerates the results process by constantly introducing new moves and routines so your body never plateaus, and you never get bored! Whether you want to get lean, bulk up, or just plain get ripped, there’s an endless variety of ways to mix and match the routines to keep you motivated the full 90 days and beyond!

    Insanity – P90X vs Insanity

Insanity LogoInsanity was release July 9th 2009. And I had been waiting for it’s arrival since early June, but to my dismay the release was pushed back. Insanity is also a great workout routine and is completely different from P90X. Insanity is basically an all cardio workout. Meaning not extra equipment is nessecary. Shaun T, the creator of Hip Hop Abs is the mastermind behind Insanity. In the Insanity routine you will workout 6 days per week. Five of the days are killer cardio days and the other is a much needed recovery day. Don’t let the name fool you, even though you will not be jumping around your living room you are still going to sweat. I don’t think I have ever sweat as much as I do during my Insanity workouts. Shaun has tapped into the sweat fountain for sure. Shaun T introduces whats called Max Interval Training in Insanity where you will push yourself 100% for three minutes and rest for only 30 seconds before pushing again. The month one workouts range from 38 – 45 minutes in length and trust me, you will be glad that they are that short. Insanity also has a fit test workout, but unlike P90X’s fit test, Insanity’s fit test is part of the program and you will do this 25 minutes test approximatly every two weeks to track your progress.

I was a bit skeptical about this program simply because I have not worked out with a Shaun T video before and I was use to Tony Horton. I was affraid I would not like Shaun T and he would be annoying. Well I was way off! I am actually glad Shuan t did this workout, I could’nt imagine it any other way. Even though he’s on the dvd it really does seem as if he’s right there with you pushing and motivating you the whole time. And let me tell you something else, Shaun T is Insane!!! These workout are not for the modest person looking to get results without effort, if thats you, back away quickly cause this workout is not for you.

Insanity’s diet guide is forward and simple, but lets be honest, Insanity is not about the whole diet thing. It’s about the hardest workout ever put on dvd. That’s not a marketing scheme either. Month one has been the hardest month of my fitness life and just the other day I preveiwed some of the month two videos and OMG. Month two workout will incorporate even harder moves along with an extra 20 minutes each day, and I thought what I was doing was insane. Someone please help me LOL.

    The Method Behind The Madness:
The secret to these mind-blowing results: MAX Interval Training. Shaun T took traditional interval training and flipped it on its head—you perform long bursts of maximum-intensity exercises with short periods of rest. Each workout keeps you constantly challenged as you alternate between aerobic and anaerobic intervals performed at your MAX. The result: burn up to 1,000 calories in an hour and get the most insane body in 60 days.

    Conclusion – P90X vs Insanity

Be sure and figure out which program will work best for you. Each will offer different results though both can get you “ripped”.

I hope the above information helps you decide which program best suites your needs. If you still have questions about Insanity or P90X feel free and contact me at Rob@Pledgetostayfit.com.

    Shakeology Review Success Stories

Lets face it, your diet/workout program is 20% Physical and 80% from your DIET. Shakeology really does simplify nutrition and the reason I wanted to have a Shakeology review. For me, it makes sticking to a diet that much easier, and it tastes great. I drink it everyday and it has giving me that extra bit of energy (naturally) for my Insanity/P90X workouts.

I ordered my Shakeology starters pack, which is exclusively for coaches for which I get a 25% discount. I ordered the Chocolate flavor, but Shakeology also comes in Green Berry. Shakeology comes in a bag with 30 days worth of servings. You can drink Shakeology as a meal replacement or a healthy snack alternative. Learn More at my SHAKEOLOGY website

So far I have tried Chocolate Shakeology 3 different ways. The first was straight out of the bag. 1 scoop mixed with 8 oz. of water and a handful of ice. I really like it with a lot of ice, kind of like a thick milkshake. Next I tried it with 1 scoop and 8 oz. 1% almond milk, this was a nice improvement. So I researched some recipes and came up worth the following:

    1 Scoop of Chocolate Shakeology
    1 Banana
    1 TbSp of peanut butter
    1 cup of ice
    8oz of water

This was entirely different from my previous two tastings. I REALLY enjoyed it this way, it tasted like a Reeses Cup smoothie, even my kids loved it. Although I plan to try other recipes there is really no reason too, This one is a WINNER. So if you have the Chocolate Shakelogy be sure and give this recipe a try.

What am I to expect to gain by drinking Shakeology?
From Beachbody’s 90 day study this is what they observed:

by the end of WEEK ONE
    - Improved Digestion and regularity (check)
    - Reduced Cravings (check)

by the end of WEEK FOUR
    - Increased energy (check)
    - lost weight (check)
    - Improved Mental Clarity (check)

by the end of WEEK TWELVE
    - Lost 10 pounds and 2 inches off waist on average (check)
    - Reduced risk of heart desease
    - lowered cholestrol on average of 30% and even up to 70%
    - Healthier skin , hair, and nails (check)

I drink this everyday, recently I decided to drink Shakeology for breakfast. There is by far no better breakfast out there.

Whether you want to get lean, bulk up, or just plain get ripped, there’s an endless variety of ways to mix and match the routines to keep you motivated.

    My Review
Ok so I purchased P90X back on October 2007.  I was pretty excited, I have always been atheletic and in decent shape. I am not one of those guys thats like to go to the gym and workout.  I had never even tried a workout dvd prior to P90X becasue I did not see myself staying with it or doing the same video everyday (BORING!).  The P90X commercial was WAY different. This came with 12 workouts! and Diet guide. What hooked me was the layout of the program.  You will have a week to week program to follow with specific dvd’s, which after 3 weeks you change to a much needed Recovery Week, only to start a entirely new work out phase and different workouts.  Now, the workouts are EXTREME as the title suggest. Each day you can figure about one hour plus to devote to P90X. In the classic version you will have 3 days of resistance workouts and added to thes are the ab workouts. The resistance workouts are about an hour and the ab one is 16 minutes. What I learned to do was split the resistance workout from the ab workout and do them completely seperatly. I did my workouts first thing in the morning and the ab workout later in the day. Best part of P90X is there is no thought process, just follow the layout and your GTG! It can also be taylored to any way you may want to do it.  It has 3 different versions to follow.  Classic,  Doubles and Lean.  Easy enough right.

Below I will just give a breif review of each dvd.

Chest & Back: This is push and pull to the max…you will go from push ups to pull-ups and by using different hand positions and grips to work different muscles.  This workout is really tuff, once I got finished (or so I thought) Tony says ” we are gonna do that whole thing agan”  WHAT !
Plyometrics: (Jump Training) “The Mother of All P90X Workouts! And I kid you not.  I could not even do this workout until I completed my 1st 90 days in the lean version( where Cardio X replaces Plyometrics) .  Like Tony Says” Get your little bucker my friend, cause this one works ya”  When I did start to do it I had to really pace myself slowly to keep from feeling nuasous, but after a few times I was able to Bring it!
Shoulders And Arms: Man o Man I look forward to this workout. It focuses on the “Glamour Muscles” Shoulder Biceps and Triceps.  You will be working these muscles hard on this day. You will do a set of 3 exercise in the order of Shoulder, Biceps then Triceps and then repeat those same moves. 5 Sets
Yoga X: For me I have a really hard time with Yoga, for those of you who do not think yoga will work ya, you are dead wrong.  This is one of the hardest workouts for me and you will be sweating your butt off.
Legs & Back: Time for legs, as if I havent used them all week in the other workouts, now its time to Bring it.  In the workout you will go from leg, to calve to pull-ups.  Good Luck with the wall squats.
Kenpo X: Kempo is fun fun fun. You’ll be done with this workout before ya know it.  From punching to kicking Karate style, fun packed workout right here.
X Stretch: This is mainly used on your recovery weeks but is also your 7th day workout (or you can chose to rest)
Core Synergistics: Synergistics is working mutiple muscles at the same time. This is another really tuff workout for me.  You are using your core muscles in every move from pushups to squats and lunges.
Chest Shoulders and Triceps:  Back to shoulders and triceps. I enjoy all of the non cardio days and this one is another one of my favorites, you will doing push ups in so many forms on this day while blasting those tricep muscles as well.
Back and Biceps:  Just what it says…Time to blast those biceps, move after move after move, and your break from biceps is pull ups.  By the end of this workout you will attempting 1 arm pushup and plyo push ups…Oh Ya Babay!!
Cardio X: Another fun cardio workout. This incorporates all the other cario workouts in 1. You’ll start with Yoga, then move to Kenpo, Plyo, and finish with Core.  This is the shortest P90X workout at 43 minutes, but its a huge calorie burn.
Ab Ripper X:  As Tony says “I HATE IT, BUT I LOVE IT”

Each workout has a warm-up phase and cool down phase, which are critical to your sucess…
PS Dont forget the P90X Recovery Drink.

    P90X Results and Recovery Formula

Recover faster and see better results!

A great-tasting shake that’s specially designed to provide the precise nutrients you need to recover quickly after intense workouts, P90X Results and Recovery Formula offers a unique mix of:

    • Simple and complex carbohydrates for optimum glycogen replenishment*
    • A high Protein Efficiency Ratio (PER) blend to provide the critical building blocks for rapid muscle resynthesis*
    • Vitamins, including antioxidants, to help reduce muscle soreness and assist in repair and growth*

Studies show that with proper nutrition during the first hour following a workout you can increase your body’s ability to recover more than 100%. The key component to maximizing this “window of opportunity” is a formulation of approximately 4 parts carbohydrates to 1 part protein. P90X Results and Recovery Formula combines the proper nutrients into this state-of-the-art, great tasting, body-shaping cocktail that’s guaranteed to take your workouts to the next level.

    My Review
I have personally tried a bunch of different protein and post workout supplements and have yet to find one to even come close to the P90X Drink.  And it taste better than any of the other products that I have tried.  This is exactly what your body needs after an intense workout like the P90X.  I’ve even mixed a 50% portion for during my really intense workouts. This really helps me push through and complete a workout. I don’t feel as sore in the morning and I rarley crash when I use the Recovery Formula faithfully. I have attched a couple excerts below.

If you are doing the P90X workouts you know personally how tough they are and this drink is something you do not want to skip on. YOU NEED IT after these types of workouts.

I get a lot of questions regarding the amount of sugar in the Recovery Drink. So here is the answer-

After an intense weight training workout, your muscles are depleted of glycogen. The sugar in the recovery drink is immediately absorbed into the muscles to replenish those glycogen stores which your muscles need to rebuild and repair themselves after a hard weight training workout. At this point, it is not a bad thing for your body, but rather, it is just what your body needs. It will not cause weight gain if used properly.

If you drink the recovery drink after a not-so-taxing workout, then the sugar will NOT replenish glycogen stores (since they don’t need to be replenished) but rather it will cause an insulin spike as sugar does normally. At this point it can cause weight gain and be bad.

If you are wasted after a strength training workout, the recovery drink will help repair those muscles and reduce soreness aiding in recovery. If you are not wasted, then you are wasting your time with the recovery drink.

What’s The Deal With The Recovery Formula…

P90X Results and Recovery Formula is a four-parts-carbohydrates-to-one-part-protein powder that speeds muscle recovery.

When you exercise anaerobically (weight training, the high end of intervals, etc.), you burn blood sugar and glycogen. If you give it your all for about an hour, you’ll probably deplete both of those resources. The carbs in Recovery Formula rush in to replenish that blood sugar and glycogen. Meanwhile, the protein piggybacks in, getting to muscles for a head start on resynthesis.

This 4:1 recovery drink model was conceived by John Ivy and Robert Portman in a landmark study you can read in the book Nutrient Timing: The Future of Sports Nutrition.

First off, the carb–protein balance should be between 3:1 and 5:1 to work optimally. If you take in more protein than that or you add fat or fiber, it slows the absorption of the carbohydrates and you miss the post-workout window of about 1 hour during which nutrients are absorbed readily.

Secondly, while Recovery Formula primarily works for strength workouts, there’s an anaerobic component to most of our “aerobic,” or cardio, workouts, which you know if you’ve done P90X’s “Plyometrics” workout.

Because not every workout is going to hammer you, you should decide how much Recovery Formula you need on a sliding scale. If you’re so wasted that you’re having difficulty moving the muscle groups you just worked, then a full serving of Recovery Formula is called for. If you feel a little shaky but not trashed, you probably have a little glycogen left over, so drink half a serving.

Another factor in deciding how you use Recovery Formula is how much blood sugar you began your workout with. If your diet is very lean, you may be tapped to begin with, so sipping a little during your workout would be hugely beneficial. There’s no hard and fast rule. If you feel perfectly good post-workout, you likely didn’t train hard enough for Recovery Formula. It’s really up to you to gauge how you feel, and use some common sense.

Finally, Recovery Formula is specially designed for maximum absorption, and it has a lot of extra goodies in it. But if you’re getting fit on the cheap, you can make your own recovery drink with apples or grape juice (the acids in orange juice mess with the absorption process, so don’t use that) and a couple tablespoons of vanilla protein powder.

And no, it doesn’t taste weird. It tastes like a fruit juice float.
