The Method Behind the Madness


The Insanity Challenge uses a concept called Interval training which allows a person to beat the “stress adaption response”. This is what happens when the body gets used to exercising at a single level of exertion and plateaus. An intense interval workout will include a set to perform at your maximum effort, followed by one of a lower intensity, only to repeat the cycle to achieve a cumulative effect on the body.

Insanity uses what Shaun T calls MAX Interval Training. In Max interval training we replace your moderate exercise with maximum intensity, and your short intervals of intensity with short periods of rest. Raising your heart rate to 80 percent or more with high-intensity workouts forces your body to utilize fast-twitch muscle fibers that are not normally used in traditional cardio exercises. Even during your lower-intensity exercise these fast-twitch fibers will continue to burn extra fat away.

As a result, you can expect to experience faster increases in fitness and more efficient fat and calorie burning—as much as 1,000 calories per hour.
