P90X Workout Schedule

The P90X workout schedule comes in 3 different forms, Classic, Lean and Doubles. Each of these layouts is designed for different results. I personally think everyone should start with the classic version. It’s a great balanced workout for adding muscle and cutting fat. If you are looking for the right P90X workout schedule for you think of how much energy you have and what your goals may be. P90X is an intense program and is designed to get you in the best shape of your life with the concept of “Muscle confusion“, which will keep you from hitting the plateau that most programs do. So make sure you follow one of these schedules closely.

CLASSIC P90X Workout Schedule

Consider this the starting line to the extreme physical and mental challenge ahead. It’s time to show what you’ve got. It may take some time to get used to the rigors of this program, but with patience and determination, you will go the distance. P90X – Bring It!®

Classic P90X Workout Schedule

Classic P90X Workout Schedule

DOUBLES P90X Workout Schedule

The doubles plan of attack is for those of you looking to add some extra cardio for weight loss or performance. P90X is already stressful in itself with the classic schedule so keep that in mind. Those of you that decide to do the doubles routine need to be injury free and have plenty of energy to add an extra workout 2-3 days per week.

Doubles P90X Workout Schedule

Doubles P90X Workout Schedule

LEAN P90X Workout Schedule

P90X Lean is for those who want a more cardio-based and slightly less intensive program. Make no mistake, this is the real deal and no picnic. In fact, you may sweat more than in P90X. What you sacrifice in overall gains in strength and speed, you’ll make up for with positive changes in lean body mass.

P90X Workout Schedule Final Thoughts

Each of these P90X workout schedules will get you amazing results. You need to keep in mind your overall goals and choose the P90X workout schedule accordingly. Personally I suggest going with the Classic schedule as I provides a good variety of workouts, hitting 3 days of cardio and 3 days of resistance training which is a very well balanced routine.

Pete Haack Before And After

Before and After Photos P90X and Asylum

I’m often asked to share my experience of starting up the Beachbody programs and eventually becoming a Team Beachbody Coach. It’s definitely been a journey that has changed my life. Now I hope that through the opportunity I have been given to become a Coach that I can pay it forward to help others to do the same.

I was involved in Track & Field in high school and college. During my senior year of college, I was involved in a car accident on my way to class one day. Another driver ran a stop sign and hit my car directly on the driver’s side at a high rate of speed. The impact left me in the hospital for a week with a fractured spleen and unable to finish my last outdoor season. At the time of my accident I weighed 155 lbs. Over the next few years I consistently put on more and more weight until I decided I needed to do something about it. I had gone up over 200 lbs. and was looking at upgrading my wardrobe yet again to accommodate another new pant size.

I started participating in open Track & Field meets as a way to motivate myself to stay in shape. In my first meet I ran the 200 meters and fell down about 30 yards from the finish line. Not a good start, but I didn’t give up and continued to run one meet a year for the next few years. One day while practicing on the track I felt a pop in my hamstring. It ended up being a pretty moderate hamstring strain and took a little over a month to come back from. One thing about hamstring injuries is that they are difficult to shake. I continued to have the same injury year-after-year until I saw some research on hamstring injuries and the impact of improving balance and core strength to reduce the likelihood of injury. I viewed a presentation that showed the rehabilitation and off-season exercises that major universities were using for their football and track athletes to prevent these injuries. One night, while watching the P90X infomercial, I realized that P90X incorporated many of these same moves into its program. I ordered the program in February of 2010 and haven’t looked back.

This past track season I decided to use Insanity: The Asylum during the season to stay in shape and reduce the amount of time I would spend training on the track. My conditioning had improved so much after using the program that I decided to go to Cleveland, Ohio to run in the USA Track & Field National Masters Championships. I felt like I was in great shape and if I continued the Asylum program I would only get better. Due to a condition in my calves that limits my ability to train regularly on the track, I took an unusual approach and used Asylum as my primary training program and only incorporated one or two workouts on the track each week. It proved to be successful as I achieved my goal of winning a medal by placing third in the 400 meter dash at the National Championships in my age group.

It was at this point that I found myself promoting the Beachbody products to everyone I knew and had even convinced a few people to purchase P90X. When people who were on the program had questions, they asked me. I was already doing many of the same things I do now, but without actually being a Beachbody Coach. I remembered a blog post I had read months earlier where Tony Horton wrote about the coaching opportunity, and I figured I should look into it more closely. It didn’t hurt that I could get a discount on Beachbody programs and supplements.

The truth is that I know what I have gained from the Beachbody programs and support system on Team Beachbody. I wish that there was a way to take this feeling that I have of being fit, happy, and healthy and bottle it up and hand it out to everyone. Being a Beachbody Coach and sharing my story is the next closest thing I can think of. There is such a great feeling from being a part of a company that is working to put an end to obesity and bring wellness to others. One of the greatest joys in life is being used for a purpose and I feel like this is mine.

The Winning Combination of Shakeology and P90X

Shakeology and P90X

Shakeology and P90X

If you have started Tony Horton’s P90X, you may find that your appetite has increased, and you are faced with the temptation to eat larger meals. The P90X routines are intense and may be working your body like never before. Anytime you start a new intensive workout program, your diet and nutritional needs will change.

Whether you have already began your P90X workouts or are interested in starting P90X, adding Shakeology to your regiment, will help you get into shape quicker.

Why is that? – Shakeology and P90X

P90X is cardio intensive, which burns tons of calories. P90X also builds muscle, which requires more calories to sustain. Your body need to replace those calories with a healthy combination of nutrients, carbohydrates, and protein. Shakeology provides the ingredients to complement the intense workout P90X provides.

You have heard me mention Shakeology and the benefits numerous times in other articles. This shake contains micronutrients and all natural ingredients to aid in digestion, contribute to weight loss, increase your energy, and build muscle. Combining Shakeology and P90X only magnifies the shake’s benefits.

Shakeology provides a healthy snack following an intensive workout routine. The ingredients provide essential micro- and macronutrients your body needs after a workout. Shakeology replaces what P90X takes out.

Other protein shakes do not have the added nutrients and all natural ingredients you can find in a Shakeology drink.

Can it Be a Meal Replacement? – Shakeology and P90X

The P90X program includes a nutritional plan, and you will notice many of the meals are 400-500 calories. There are not enough calories in a Shakeology drink alone for these meals. But if you add milk, peanut butter, and a banana to your shake, you have yourself a great post-workout meal.

Dozens of Shakeology recipes give you plenty of alternative meal replacement ideas to supplement your P90X program.

Shakeology as a Snack – Shakeology and P90X

After your P90X workout, there is a good chance you will be quite hungry. It is easy to waste the hard work you have done with a poor diet. Junk food tastes good! Your self-discipline probably prevents you from eating everything you can get your hands on. But a large meal will still be rather tempting.

Instead of gorging after a workout, using Shakeology and P90X together leads to more effective workouts by helping you avoid high-fat, high-calorie meals. Drinking this shake can ward off hunger and fill you up so you will eat a smaller meal later on.

This winning combination of Shakeology and P90X will give you sustained energy, help you limit calories, offer a nutritionally packed snack, and provide the right blend of proteins and carbohydrates. Leading to faster results.

What’s the Difference Between P90X and P90X2 | P90X vs P90X2

difference between p90x and P90X2Perhaps one of the biggest questions of this year is going to be What is the difference between P90X and P90X2. So let’s break down the differences in these two top notch programs.

In my opinion I don’t think P90X2 will be better than P90X, but rather an extension of it. Having said that there was a lot more put into P90X2 in terms of development. The develop team consisted of not only Tony Horton, but a Team of world class fitness experts and Beachbody own fitness expert Steve Edwards. They are taking the “Muscle confusion” concept to a whole new level.

What’s the difference between P90X and P90X2

P90X was created to get you in the best physical shape of your life while P90X2 was created to increase athletic performance with body transformation being a enevitable byproduct.

P90X changed your physique using muscle confusion. Which used a combination of resistance training, plyometrics cardio training and yoga to keep your muscles guessing throughout the program. P90X2 will incorporate the same training protocols but also layers in a break through scientific technique called Post-Activation-Potentiation or P.A.P. Which will stimulate, mobility, power, speed, and agility to increase your athletism.

P90X has 3 30 day phases designed to avoid a plateau by constantly alternating between Adaptation and mastery moves. P90X2 has more flexible phases ranging from 3 to 6 weeks but with individual goals for each phase. It also establishes a strong foundation and increases in strength, explosiveness and power.

P90X kept you moving 6 days per week. While P90X2 heavy work load means more recovery is reguired keeping the workout week at only 5 days.

P90X incorporates 12 challenging workouts and P90X2 has 12 ALL NEW workouts plus 2 additional extreme workouts. And finally P90X2 – X2-Yoga is 60 minutes with all new moves focused on sports specific training.

P90X includes a solid 90 day nutrition plan, P90X2 also contains a nutrition plan but more focused on 90 days of performance based fuel integrating the latest research in nutrition science including all new recipes and addition vegan and grain free options.

Those are the basic differences, if you have completed a round of P90X get ready for an all new challenge because it called P90X2. Bring It!

Check out the video on the difference between P90X and P90X2 from the program’s creator, Tony Horton.

What To Do After Insanity | What’s Next?

after insanity

After Insanity

First of all, if you completed the Insanity program, you should feel a huge sense of accomplishment as this is no easy feat – even for those in shape. Insanity is one of Beachbody’s most challenging workouts, but also one of the most rewarding.

The next question you may be wondering is: what do I do AFTER Insanity?

Maybe you thought you could now pass your days away sitting on the sidelines. Not exactly. It’s true, you do need to keep working out in order to maintain or improve your fitness level. I am sure you don’t want all that hard work to go wasted.

Or maybe you ar ready to go onto the next fitness challenge.

First, allow yourself some time off just doing light cardio for a week or two, as you deserve it. But, don’t wait too long!

There are a few workouts you can do after Insanity that will keep you at the level you worked so hard to achieve. One option is to do Insanity all over again now that your fitness level is much better. If that sounds like torture to you, there are alternative options.

After Insanity for Women

For women, a great way to keep in optimal shape is ChaLEAN Extreme. This is an extreme fitness workout designed to increase your metabolism, keep you toned and burn calories. There are three phases – burn, push and lean, – designed to help you burn fat more effeciently. “Muscle Burns Fat”. The workouts range from 30-45 minutes so there is not a lot of time you will need to commit to. The only extra equipment you will need is a seet of dumbbells or resistance bands. Unlike P90X there are no pull-ups in Chalean Extreme.

Chalene keeps a smile on her face as she pushes you through weight resistant training and cardio exercises. Chalenes’ routines are still a great workout, but they are at a much more relaxed pace if you are trying to slow down after Insanity.

Click Here to learn more about Chalean Extreme.

After Insanity for Men

I am sure you are familiar with Tony Horton’s P90X or P90X2. His popular program is filled with routines that challenge you in a different way. P90X touches on every muscle in your body, with each of the 12 workouts designed to focus on different muscle groups. Look to spend a little more than an hour per day with P90X. You will need a couple extra items as well. You will need a place to do pull ups (or pull up bar) and a set of dumbbells or resistance bands.

P90X has a lot more weight training to round off the lean body you have achieved from Insanity. The pace is not as intense, yet it provides a balanced workout and a great supplement to the Insanity program.

After Insanity for the Insane

For those of you who are not interested in throttling back, but instead want to forge full speed ahead, try Insanity Asylum. Shaun T’s sequel provides an even higher level of intensity (as if there could be!) for all the hard core fitness diehards. Asylum workouts range from 25-60 minutes and only reguire a place to do pull ups. The extra equipment like the agility ladder and the jump rope come with the program.

This program is designed using similar training drills as the ones elite athletes engage in. These sports training workouts focus on speed, agility, strength, and core. The workouts are a step up, but quite different from Insanity.

Click Here to learn more about Asylum.

Pay it forward after Insanity

Having completed Insanity I’m sure you now feel a real since of accomplishment. And maybe you feel you would like to pay it forward and help others attempting the Insanity challenge or any routine for that matter. I would suggest looking into the Beachbody Coach program and do just that. As a Beachbody Coach you can continue your own fitness journey all the while helping others achieve their own goals and maybe earn some extra money, at the very least you can benefit from the nice 25% savings.

Click here to learn more about the Beachbody Coach program.

Final Thoughts for after Insanity

Now obviously there are more options than those listed above, the idea is not to put in so much hard work with Insanity and stop completely. What is important is that you listen to your body and choose a fitness program that works for you. Find a workout that challenges you, but don’t overtrain and risk injury or burnout. Let your body rest in between intense programs, but remain on target for staying in the best shape of your life.

For some, life after Insanity is all uphill and it just becomes a matter of how bad you want to conquer that hill.

P90X Workout FAQ | Common Questions Answered

I came across this article going over an actual users frequently asked questions. It really hit home and I wanted to share it with my readers.

1. What’s your favorite part about it? I like that it’s a program. When I got it, I plugged in all of my days and milestones into my calendar. I knew immediately how to balance my workouts with other responsibilities. This doesn’t mean I don’t have room to make adjustments, like last week.

The second thing that I really like is that it has its own pre-tested schedule. What I mean by this is that I don’t walk into a gym and think, “Hmmm, today I feel like I need cardio, legs, and back…” I don’t have to think about what comes next. It’s focused, it targets all of the right muscles and has the appropriate amount of cardio built in. All I have to do is follow it.

2. What’s your least favorite thing about it? Two things…first of all, there’s no excuses. It’s a home program, so it’s kinda staring at you from the corner of the room. The gym never closes. I both like this and hate this at the same time. The other thing to consider is that it’s more of an up front financial investment, which is different from a monthly gym membership. More money comes out of pocket up front, but then in the long run, it’s most likely a cheaper option.

3. Is it for everyone? Yes, I think anyone could do it. But, not everyone may be ready for it. There are minimum fitness requirements. If you want to do it but don’t think you’re ready, there are introductary programs like P90.

4. Are the workouts really that difficult? Yes. There are many times that we hit the pause button.

5. What’s the most difficult workout in your opinion? In every single workout, there’s something I dread. I get nervous and a little queasy when it comes up, and focus on bringing intensity. Before I’ve realized it, it’s done and we’re on to the next thing. The three workouts where my muscles always work to failure are yoga, core synergistics, and plyo.

6. I’d like to do P90X, but I’m not sure about the nutrition recommendations. Do I really need to stop drinking beer and change my diet that drastically? One should already be eating this way, regardless of whether or not they’re on the program. The nutrition program isn’t calorie-restrictive, it’s healthy.

I love a glass of wine or a good margarita, but the presence of alcohol in the system causes fatigue, changes liver functioning, affects hormone levels, and can alter how fat is metabolized in the system. Even one drink can negatively impact REM cycles during sleep. If you’ve ever awoke at 2am because you couldn’t sleep after drinking, you understand this. To get maximum results during the 90 days, the dietary recommendations should be followed. I would hate to see someone put in this kind of effort in an fitness program and not get the results they were looking for.

7. Aren’t you proud of yourself and the way you look in the mirror? When I look in the mirror, I see all of my flaws. I don’t know a woman who’s not that way. When I look at photos, I’m astounded. I think to myself, “Wow, is that really how I looked then, is that really what I look like right now?” It feels self absorbed to focus on photos, but I understand now why all exercise programs require you to take them. The mirror lies, especially for women.

8. Will you do P90X again? I’d like to. Its a sustainable program. Ideally, what I’d like to do after finishing this round on Dec 9th, is to do something with a high cardio focus through the holidays, then begin a second round sometime in January. One of the programs that looks fun for filling in the gaps is Turbofire. I’ll also probably toss on my running shoes a couple of times a week and maybe do a jingle bell run.

9. Do you think it was worth your investment? Yes, absolutely.

10. Do you have any advice for me before I begin the program? I read somewhere that most people succeed if they hold themselves accountable in 3 separate ways, so I decided to do this.

- I blog about it with weekly updates so that if I fall off the wagon, I’ve got some serious explaining to do.
- I have a workout partner.
- I have a P90X Coach.

I would encourage anyone beginning this (or any fitness program) to tell the world, find a workout partner, and get a mentor or friend.

Shakeology and P90X | All Your Questions Answered

The whole Beachbody community is buzzing about Shakeology and all the great health benefits it provides. Today, Steve Edwards answers your questions about how to best incorporate it into your P90X regimen.

Shakeology and Salad

Can Shakeology replace one of my meals in the P90X nutrition plan?

I’d hope so, given that it’s a meal replacement shake! [laughs] But seriously, Xers do have a different nutritional equation to consider than most people. Generally, meal replacement shakes are designed so that you drink them instead of eating a meal to help you lose weight. Of course, Shakeology fits into this mold just fine. In fact, given how nutrient-dense it is, I’d say it’s better than anything on the market. And even though it contains an entire day’s worth of many nutrients, it’s still only 140 calories.

Aren’t most of the meals in P90X nutrition plan in the 400 to 500 calorie range?

Exactly, and the average Xer won’t be served well to cut out calories. The reason is that as you get fitter your nutritional requirements change, along with your body composition. When you first start to exercise, you can lose weight by just restricting your caloric intake. But as you gain muscle, you need to eat more to continue losing weight, and this is often a lot more than you ate when you first began losing weight—sometimes it’s more than double. If you eat too little during P90X, your weight loss will plateau, along with your ability to do the workouts. [Read more...]
